Script quote on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A pale forearm rests across a maroon cushion, with the words "I'm a walking travesty" written along it in thin, dark script. The linework is even and the lettering is set in a flowing cursive with a slight slant, shown in black ink with no shading. The soft, warm-toned background includes a striped blanket and a glimpse of a navel piercing at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every autumn the parish of Little Sutting dressed its scarecrow in the best of what the church jumble had left over, and every autumn the crows laughed at it. This year it was Mrs Abel's doing. She had stitched a bodice from a ballgown, a hat from a christening bonnet, and a pair of spats from a bishop's gaiters, then stood back in the orchard with her hands on her hips and declared it the finest guardian the Pippin rows had ever seen.

Old Joss Penrose, who kept the cider press, said nothing for a while. He was looking at the scarecrow's left sleeve, which had been cut from a pale blue nightshirt with thin stripes running down it like rain on a window. "Well," he said at last, "it's a walking travesty, Mother Abel."

She took it as a compliment. Nobody in Little Sutting had ever been called a travesty before, and she wore the word for a week like a brooch. By the first frost she had carried it up the lane, past the forge, into the Co-op queue, and onto the notice board, where it was pinned beside the raffle tickets.

The crows, to their credit, remained unimpressed. They sat on the top wire of the orchard fence and watched the scarecrow stand in its finery through the lean autumn, and one morning, when the last Pippin had dropped and the sun came up thin and gold, they went through the rows and took every apple the scarecrow had been meant to save. Mrs Abel found the pips scattered across the bodice. She laughed until she had to sit down in the wet grass. She kept the hat.
