Small script tattoo between the shoulder blades

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with her hair in a loose ponytail is seen from behind on a city street, wearing a white halter top with an open back. A small black script tattoo sits between her shoulder blades, just below the neckline straps, and a small black diamond-shaped tattoo is visible lower on her left side. The linework is fine and the tattoo is in black ink only, with the warm, softly blurred street setting filling the background.

You close the lost-property hatch at eleven because nobody claims anything after dark. The night porter at the station has taught you that much, along with how to hold a torch between your teeth while you sort the drawer of gloves. Tonight there is one thing left on the shelf that nobody logged: a small black diamond, the kind a jeweller sets on a cheap chain, wrapped in a bus timetable from March.

Unfolding the timetable, you find a line written in biro across the back, the letters leaning hard to the right as if the writer was in a hurry or cold: 'Keep the light on for the stairs.' That is all. No name, no route. You turn the diamond over under the strip lamp and it throws a pale spark onto the tiles, and you feel foolish for hunting for a meaning in it.

Outside, the city keeps its orange hum. Trams sigh past the arches, a man sells roses from a bucket by the kiosk, and a cyclist rings his bell at nobody. You watch the wet setts shine and think of the stairs in the flat above the bakery where you used to live, the bulb that never worked and the landlady who swore she would fix it by spring.

On Thursday a parcel arrives at the office addressed to the lost-property team, with no sender, containing a second diamond and a single line in the same leaning hand: 'Thank you for keeping it.' You pin both to the board beside the kettle, then go back to the drawer of gloves.
