Script quote reading The rest is still unwritten
Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a single line of black cursive script reading The rest is still unwritten followed by an ellipsis, running horizontally across the upper chest close to the collarbone. The letterforms have a fine, even stroke with little shading, and the ink is a dark, slightly soft black. The photograph is taken at a close angle, with a thin necklace chain crossing the left side of the frame and a dark garment along the bottom edge.

Dear Mags,

The oven door sticks before four, so I have learned to lean my hip into it the way you showed me. Tomas has the first tins out on the racks and the back room smells of scorched sugar and yeast. I am writing this on the back of a delivery docket because the good paper lives in the drawer under the flour sacks, where the damp can't get at it.
You will laugh, but I finally finished the book you left behind. The last chapter had been torn out, and the final page stops mid-sentence. Somebody has written in pencil along the margin: the rest is still unwritten. I thought it was cheek when I first read it, the sort of thing a bored lodger scribbles. Now I think it was a dare.
So this morning I did something I've been putting off for two years. I took the envelope of savings out of the biscuit tin, counted it twice on the counter, and then wrapped the rye loaves in brown paper for Mrs Pryce, who has bought one every Tuesday since her husband died. She asked where I was off to. I told her I didn't know yet, and she laughed and said it was the first honest thing anybody had said to her all month.
The sky over the car park is going from ink to pale grey, and the first van is turning in. I'm leaving the lamp on for Tomas. I'll post this from the station, and if the handwriting wobbles, blame the cold and the bus timetable, not the feeling. Write back care of the Sheffield post office. I'll pick up the rest there.
Love, Jo
