Script quote across upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A three-line quote is set in a flowing cursive script across the upper back, centred on the shoulder blades. The lettering is in a single ink tone with clean, even strokes and a classic serif-style script. The skin is warm toned with the text as the main focus, against a plain background with the top's straps framing the edges of the frame.

The big top had not been raised since October, and by January the canvas had gone stiff with frost, so Edie had to thaw the ropes in a bucket of kettle water before she could coil them. Her uncle Lyle stood at the gate of the winter field with his hands buried in his coat, counting the vans that were left. Four, he said. Used to be eleven.

Nobody on the site spoke about the elephants that had gone to a dealer in Norfolk. The old grey horse, Biscuit, had grown a coat like a doormat and wintered in the sheep shed with the hay. Edie fed him at dusk, breath smoking in the lamplight, and listened to the wireless in the caravan crackle out the shipping forecast for places they had only ever played: Humber, Tyne, Dogger.
On the last night before the cold snap broke, she climbed the rigging alone. The trapeze bar still hung from its rope, dulled and tacky with old chalk. She sat on the platform in a borrowed jumper and looked down at the frozen field, the scattered vans, the single lit window of the farmhouse. Nothing about it looked like summer. But her hands were warm on the bar, and she understood they had been warm all week, through every bitter morning, as if someone had left a stove burning in her chest.
In the morning she took a scrap of yellow silk from the costume trunk, the colour of a spilled lemon, and stitched it into the lining of her coat, just over the heart. Lyle found her on the wagon steps. 'Going somewhere?' he asked. 'Only as far as spring,' she said, and pulled the collar up against the wind.
