Script quote tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm shows a black cursive script tattoo reading everything happens for a reason, set horizontally across the inner arm. The lettering uses thin, even linework with no shading or fill, and the ink is solid black. The wearer's hand rests across the arm, with a cream chunky-knit sleeve, a cross charm bracelet and a gold wristwatch in the frame.

Dear Mags, the barge is sitting low in the Oxford lock again and Mr Pardoe has taken to reading the tide tables aloud to the cat, so you may take that as a sign of how dull things are. I found your tin of Typhoo under the tiller box, the one with the chipped lid you swore you'd thrown out in Reading. I have put it on the shelf above the stove where you can see it when you come back for the spring run.

I did not tell you about the letter from the chandler's in Banbury. It came Tuesday, addressed to you in that thin copperplate hand, and I thought it was a bill, so I left it propped against the kettle. Then I thought it might be the thing you were waiting on, and I opened it, and I am sorry for that. It was only a receipt for the new sternpost timber, paid in full, with a line at the bottom saying the rest would be delivered when the water came up. So the money is sorted and the timber is coming, and you can stop biting your nails over it.

The fog came down over the cut this morning and I sat on the roof with my tea and watched a heron stand in the shallows as if it had all the time in the world. I kept thinking of what you said on the Thames, that nothing goes wrong on the water without a reason underneath it, and that a sensible person just finds the reason and steers round it. I still don't know if that's comfort or just a clever way of sounding wise. Come home and tell me which.

Yours in the mud, Eileen.
