Script quote with a swallow design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The design shows the handwritten phrase she laughs without fear of the future in flowing black script, with a looped swash on the capital letters and descenders. A small solid black swallow in flight sits to the upper right of the words. The linework is uniform black on a pale cream background, with no shading and a simple, open composition.

She had been sacked from the bakery in Market Deeping for putting too much salt in the Victoria sponges, and she was delighted about it. She wrote that the bank manager's wife had called her a hussy at the Whit fair, and that she had laughed so hard she had to sit down on the coconut mats. That evening I walked down to the boatyard. The swallows were dipping over the black water, skimming low for flies, and their shadows slid across the slipway like thrown ink. I laughed out loud, alone, and a boy fishing off the wall looked up as if I had dropped something. Let him look. There was a ticket to Skegness folded in my purse, and the swallows, I reckoned, knew the way.
