Morven had the wings half-built on the trestle table when the mail boat sounded its horn beyond the breakwater, two long notes and a short one, which meant the sea was running high and the post would be soaked. She didn't look up. Her father's cane frame lay under a sheet of waxed linen, and she was stitching the seams with the tough thread he had kept in the tin marked for rope.

Her brother Fergus stood in the doorway turning his cap in his hands. He wanted to know whether the wings would carry her over the bay to the mainland, or only over the harbour wall, the way the gulls did when they wanted to look important. She told him the wings were for nobody but her. He laughed, then saw she wasn't joking, and went quiet in the way island boys learn when a grown woman has made up her mind.
On the morning of the test she walked out to the north cliff with the frame strapped to her shoulders. The wind came off the water hard enough to fill the linen like a sail. She stood at the edge for a long time, long enough for the mail boat to round the point and vanish behind the lighthouse. Then she ran, and the turf gave way, and for a moment nothing held her but the air she had spent a winter learning to read.
It was Fergus who spotted her first, a speck above the far beach at Kelda Point, turning slow in the updraught like a gull that had forgotten it was a gull. He ran the whole length of the harbour to tell their mother. By the time the evening boat came in, she was sitting on the bollards with the frame across her knees, binding a split joint with the rope thread. She did not look up when he came down the gangway, because there was no need. She knew he had seen.
