A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Harrow Pit trusted a joke that needed explaining, so when Walter Dunn chalked two words on the lamp-room board the lads read them twice before anyone laughed. Be happy. He had written them in one stroke, chalk never leaving the board, looping the letters the way he looped the cable on the winding drum when he was thinking. Nobody had asked him to write anything at all.

I was sixteen and sweeping the lamp-room floor the morning his wife, Nell, brought round the letter from the Coal Board. Walter read it standing in the doorway, folded it into a tight square, and put it in his top pocket over his heart, where the dust never reached. Then he went back to the board and drew a line from the left edge, into the word, and out again to the right, a single rope of white running wall to wall.

'You'll be wanting to know what it means,' he said, not turning round. 'It means the rope's still hooked on.' He tapped the slate where the line dipped under the letters. 'Every time a cage goes down, somebody has to trust the steel. Doesn't matter what the rock is doing above.'

The pit shut that autumn and the rope went to scrap. Walter's slate came home with me in a copper bucket, and thirty years on the chalk has gone soft and grey, but you can still follow the line from end to end without lifting your finger. I do it most mornings before I put the kettle on.
