Script quote with stars on a thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a thigh with black script lettering reading All you need is faith, trust and a little bit of pixie dust. Two grey shaded stars sit beside the words, and a small solid black mouse ear silhouette appears near the end of dust. The black and grey ink is shown against lightly toned skin, with the lettering running diagonally across the frame.

The reel snapped twenty minutes into the Saturday picture, and the whole of Wenlow Parva started shouting at once. I stood in the projection box with a razor blade in one hand and a tin of splicing tape in the other, listening to three hundred children stamp their boots on the wooden floor below. Mr Pardoe, who owned the Palace and had never once in his life hurried, leaned in at the hatch and told me I had five minutes or he would be selling sweets from the stage.

My hands were shaking. I had watched him join film a hundred times, but the frames kept sliding under my fingers like wet fish. I thought of my nan, who said a thing done carefully is half done already, and then I thought of the ceiling of that picture house, which Mr Pardoe's brother had painted the summer before with a crooked sky of silver stars. Nobody had asked him to. He said a building ought to have something over it that nobody could buy.
I stopped trying to be neat. I told myself the join would hold because the children believed it would, because the hero on the screen was flying and the whole room was flying with him, and that a splice takes on some of the willingness of the people watching. I laced the strip through the gate, found the sprockets, and threw the switch.
The lamp came back up over the heads of the audience, and they roared as if someone had scattered sugar over the entire town. Afterwards Mr Pardoe climbed the stairs, looked at my tape job and grunted that it would hold until Monday. It did. I have never told him that I did not believe it would hold, only that I had decided it would.
