Small dot tattoo on a hand
Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests against a black dress with a fine metallic sheen, and a diamond solitaire ring with a thin band sits on the ring finger. A small cluster of dark dots, a minimal dotwork tattoo, is placed on the side of a finger near the knuckle. The shot is a close crop on a blurred green background, with natural light and the ink reading as black on the skin.

The wire to Carrow Point failed on the second Tuesday in March, and after that the only thing that crossed the bay was light. Ada Pim, who had kept the key at the coastguard hut since her father's chest gave out, took to signalling with a hand lamp from the top of the cliff path. Three short flashes spelled the same letter every evening, and every evening the answering lamp from the Maud Lind winked back three times across the grey water.

Her brother Samuel had sailed on the Maud Lind in October for the herring grounds off Shetland. The owners wrote that she was late. The harbourmaster wrote that she was lost. Ada wrote nothing, because there was no one to post it to. She kept her lamp trimmed instead, sat on the wet step with a blanket over her knees, and counted the dark between flashes the way her father had taught her to count the distance of thunder.
On the thirty-first evening the answering light came back four times. Ada sat very still. Four was not a signal the Maud Lind had ever used. She sent her S, three short, and waited. The sea gave back three more, then a long silence, then a single flash that ran on past the rocks and out toward the Fenwick sands where no ship should be.
She walked the shingle at first light with the lamp still warm inside her coat. Caught in the weed below the slipway was a tin matchbox with a ship's name scratched on its lid, and inside, folded small and dry, was a note in her brother's hand. The Maud Lind had put into Stromness for water, and he was coming home on the Thursday boat. The note ended in a single dot, which was how Samuel had always stopped himself when he had more to say and meant to say it to her face.
