Small fine line tattoos on arm and hip
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a woman in a peach bikini from the shoulders to the upper thighs, with no face visible. The tattoos are small black fine line marks: an angular outline on the upper arm and a short vertical row of tiny dots and marks near the hip. The skin is tanned and the background is a plain white wall, with the ink clearly visible against the skin.

Dust had settled into every seam of the rover by the time Mira Okonedo reached the eastern scarp of Halden Basin, and the sensor array would only sing if she fed it the old angles by hand. The survey sheet was older than the colony. Someone had drawn the ridge as one hard line, folding back on itself like a paper crane, and beside it ran a column of dots marking the cairns where the first walkers had left water caches.

She had been told the cairns were gone. Forty years of storms, the dispatcher said, and the cache beacons had gone quiet before she was born. Mira did not argue. She clipped the sheet to the dash, switched off the heater, and drove the line the way the ink showed it, counting each dot against the odometer. Every fourth dot the ground dipped, and there was a stone with a grooved notch, exactly where the pencil had promised.
At the last dot, a mark like a half-healed scar crossed the basin floor, and under it lay a sealed tin. Inside were a dozen bead-sized reflectors, untouched by rust, and a card in a careful hand: Follow the angle, then count your own steps home. She laughed out loud in the empty cab.
That night she set the reflectors out in the same column, one per stone, so the next walker would see a line of light running back toward the colony. She did not know whose hand had written the card, only that it had been meant for someone standing exactly where she stood.
