Black and grey script lettering tattoo on the lower back of a person in a grey crop top and white shorts, photographed from behind in a mirror.

Script tattoo on lower back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A person photographed from behind in a mirror selfie, holding a phone, with their face not visible. A small block of black script lettering runs diagonally across the lower back and side, with the individual words too small to read clearly. The image is shot in soft indoor light against a plain white wall and door, with the subject wearing a grey crop top and high-waisted white shorts.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth the tailor's daughter brought the sign-writer a ribbon the colour of wet slate and asked him to put her vows on it where no one at the wedding would think to look. Ansel Pike had lettered every shopfront in Harrow Cross for forty years, and he did not ask why. He cut a pen from a goose quill, ground lamp-black with a little gum, and sat by the window until the light went grey.

He wrote the vows in letters no taller than a barley grain, running slantwise along the ribbon the way the river runs past the mill. When the ink dried it looked like nothing but a dark fleck in the weaving. Her groom, Tobias, a carter who had never read a line he did not have to, asked what it said. Ansel only tapped his temple and said it would keep.

On the wedding morning the church was cold and the bells were late. Tobias stood at the altar with the ribbon in his big hands and squinted until his eyes watered. Ruth laughed, took it back, and held it up to the candle so the words caught the light. She read them aloud, every one, and the whole congregation went quiet straining to hear, though not one of them could see a letter.

Tobias never did learn to read those words for himself. Ruth tied the ribbon back into her hair that evening, the little black lines lying across it like a road only she could walk.
