Script word "faith" on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black script word, "faith", is tattooed diagonally across the inner forearm of a light-skinned arm. The lettering uses fine, flowing strokes with varied thickness and a looping capital F. The background shows blurred gravel and soil, and the photo is taken at a slight angle.

The ink on the platform bench had dried to a grey crust by the time Maureen found the envelope tucked under the timetable board, addressed in a hand that looped and swooped like a bird that couldn't decide where to land. Inside was a single sheet from the lost-property office at Harrowgate Junction, and beneath the printed form someone had written, in pencil, Your umbrella is not lost, it is waiting for a wet day. Please come and claim it before the trains are cancelled for engineering.

She had left the umbrella on the 4:12 back in March, the green one with the bent spoke, the one her husband had bought from a stall in Scarborough the summer before he stopped coming to the coast. She had not gone looking for it. She had decided that a thing left behind on a train was a thing the universe had already dealt with, and that she would let it go the way she was learning to let go of the rest.
The lost-property clerk was a young man with a pencil behind each ear. He pushed the umbrella across the counter without a word, then tapped the sheet of paper. Read the back, he said. So she turned it over and found a second line, fainter, in the same looping pencil: Keep going. The lettering climbed the page toward the top corner as if it had somewhere to be. Outside, the rain started on the glass roof, steady and certain, and Maureen opened the green umbrella under the station clock and stepped out into it.
