Script word forgiven over a cross
Lettering · Mixed · Flash
A simple black line drawing of a cross, with a horizontal bar and a longer vertical stroke, on a plain white background. The word forgiven is written across the horizontal bar in teal cursive script with smooth, even linework. The design is flat and uncoloured apart from the teal lettering, with the script sitting centred across the crossbar.

Dear Danny,

The dodgems are being loaded onto the lorry as I write this, and Mr Pearce has already shouted at the generator twice. I found your old tin of greasepaint in the wagon today, the one with the cracked lid, and I sat on the step for an hour turning it over. You always said the cross painted on the rigging board was bad luck to touch. I should have listened.
The lad from the carousel says the fair goes north to Carlisle after the bank holiday, then down through the Fens. I asked him to pass word to the ringmaster about where to post things, which is the closest I have come to asking anyone for anything since you left. Nobody has ever told me where you went, and I stopped expecting them to years ago.
So here is the thing I meant to write. I have kept the board from the ghost train, the one with the word in your handwriting, nailed above my bunk. Every morning it says the same thing back to me. I did not want to forgive you for taking the takings and the van, and I did not want to forgive you for the rest. But the word got tired of waiting, and so did I.
Come to the Carlisle ground if you can. Stand by the big wheel at dusk, where we used to sit. If you do not come, I will still leave the light on in the booth, the way you used to, and I will know you heard me.
Love, Mags
