Focus script lettering with swash tails
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the word focus written in flowing cursive script in black, with a thin hairline swash extending from both sides of the lettering. The letterforms vary in thickness, with heavier strokes on the downstrokes and fine connecting lines. The design sits centred on a plain white background with no colour or shading.

Mrs Pell pressed the nib flat against the boy's knuckle and told him to stop trying to make the letters behave. "The f wants to lean," she said. "Let it. Your hand is only the messenger."

Tobias had spent three evenings on one word, copied out forty times in the back of a ledger the mill office no longer needed, the cheap paper bleeding at every turn. His f looked like a fishhook. His o sat on the line like a dropped button. Mrs Pell took the pen from him and wrote the word once, quickly, without lifting her eyes from the page.
"Notice the tail," she said. "Every stroke runs out past where it needs to stop. That's where the hand rests, between one thing and the next. Without the tail you've only got letters. With it you have somewhere to go."
He tried again. The f came out tall and thin, the way hers had, and then the u, and then the s curled off the end of the paper and kept going, a hairline the nib could barely hold. Mrs Pell tapped the blotter and said nothing. Outside, the six-ten whistled through the cutting and the lamp in the next street went out.
When the ink was dry Tobias folded the sheet and put it in his satchel for the morning, the word still damp at its far edge where the swash had trailed off the paper. Years later he would write thousands of invoices in a hand that never once wandered, and he would still finish each line with that thin run past the margin, because nobody had ever told him he could stop.
