Spark script tattoo on the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of a black cursive word, spark, inked on the side of a torso below the chest. The linework is thin and mostly uniform, with looped strokes and a long tail on the final letters. The palette is black ink on warm skin, set against a white top and a soft, blurred background.

The fire on Skerra had gone out the night the boats failed to come back, and by the next spring the old people had stopped mentioning it. Only Ailsa Mcrae still walked down to the shingle each evening with her hands cupped, as though something might be handed to her.

Her grandmother had taught her how the island kept its spark. A coal from the hearth was pressed into peat ash and wrapped in wet sealskin, then carried across the sound to the mainland, where the fires never died. Nobody remembered why this had been the custom. The rule was simply that it was done.
So when the ferryman refused to take her, she rowed herself. The sea was flat and grey and the oars knocked hollow in the rowlocks. Halfway across, the ash in her wrap began to smoke, and she sang the old words under her breath so the sea would not hear how frightened she was.
She reached the mainland at dusk. The first cottage door opened before she knocked, and a woman with flour to her elbows took the bundle without a word, blew gently into the ash, and a thin orange thread crept up. "Your gran's line," the woman said. "I'd know that tail of smoke anywhere." Ailsa looked back at Skerra, a dark hump on the water, and saw one small light blink there, very low, as if someone had kindled a fire of their own to see if she had made it.
