Script word tattoo on the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A side view of a torso showing a single line of black cursive script reading Vildhjärta, placed on the ribs beneath the bust. The lettering has a fine, even stroke with a looped, joined-up style and a slight slant. The skin tone is light and the photograph is taken indoors against a soft, neutral background, with a yellow lace bralette in the upper frame.

The harbour at Knappskär had gone quiet by the time the last herring boat came in, and Sigrid stood on the quay with a tin of black paint and a fine brush, waiting for her uncle to finish arguing with the buyer from Göteborg. The boat was called Vildhjärta, as it had been since before she was born, and the name ran along the stern in looped script, its strokes worn thin by salt and forty winters of rope.

The buyer wanted the hull scraped and the name taken off. Erik said nobody renamed a boat that had brought home every catch since the war, and the buyer said it was a boat, not a grandmother, and walked back up the slip with his hands in his coat. Sigrid remembered her own grandmother kneeling on the planks with her tongue between her teeth, tracing each letter as though it might try to leave.
After dark she climbed aboard, sat in the wheelhouse with the lamp turned low, and began going over the old letters. She followed each loop slowly, joining the strokes where the brush wanted to lift, and the black crept back into the grey wood like a tide returning to a rock. When she looked up, her uncle was standing at the rail with a rag over his shoulder, watching. He said nothing. He passed her the cloth for the drips, and she wiped the excess from the wet lines.
In the morning the buyer's men took the boat out past the skerries. Sigrid watched from the quay with the sun on the water, and the name caught the light, bright and freshly wet, until the hull turned and she could read it only in her head.
