Looped fine line symbol on an arm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph of a small tattoo of an abstract, script-like symbol made of thin looping strokes and a short hooked flourish. The linework is crisp, even and solid black, with no shading. The ink sits in the centre of the frame against warm skin, with the background softly out of focus.

Put another log on, Dilys, the wind's got into the chimney again. No, look at the chandler's door across the cobbles, the mark above the lintel that looks like a fish swallowing its own tail. Everybody in Porthgwyn walks under it and nobody asks. I'll tell you, because my nan told me, and she had it from a woman who knew the net-mender herself.

Ada Penhale mended nets for the luggers that went out past the Brisons. Every net she finished, she signed with that looping hand, one long curl running into the next, so the sea would know whose work was holding the fish. When her Jory went down in the February gale, she didn't stop. She sat at the window with her needle and a ball of tarred twine and wrote the loops one after another, and folk said she was counting. Each curl was a boat she was waiting on.

The hooked flourish at the top is the part people get wrong. She only drew it when a boat was home. Three winters she left the mark open, no tail on it, and the men learned to look up at the lintel as they came round the point. Then one morning the Mary Jane came limping in with her sail in ribbons and every man aboard still alive, and Ada climbed the ladder herself and finished the stroke. Left the ink wet, so the rain ran down it.

So when you're out past the Brisons and the light goes flat, don't count the loops. Count the hooks. Hand me that cup, the kettle's boiling and I've talked myself dry.
