Script words forming a heart on the side

Lettering · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of a black script quote arranged in a large heart outline across the side of the torso, with a small solid red heart in the centre of the loop. The lettering is fine and even, with consistent spacing between words, and the words read in several directions as they follow the curve. A light blue towel covers the lower part of the frame, and the background shows a pale bathroom setting.

The old road over Carrow Pass doubled back on itself at the top, a looping bend the carters called the Heart, because from the valley it looked like a shape drawn with a wet thumb on slate. Someone had cut words into the rock that ran around the curve: yesterday, today, tomorrow, and forever. At the centre, where the loop met the track, a carter's wife had daubed a red heart in paint that the weather never quite managed to remove.

Mabry Oddie drove mules up that road for thirty winters and never once stopped to read the stone properly. In March she was carrying salt and a sick boy's medicine down from the high farms when the snow came thick enough to hide her lead mule's ears. She could feel the road turn under her boots and knew she had come round the bend again, though it had no business being there twice. She shouted the words aloud the way her father had taught her, reading them round the curve like counting stitches, and the mules steadied on the sound.

By the third turn she understood. The road brought every traveller back to the same place, and the only way off was to choose which word to walk toward. She had been trying to get forward for so long that she had not noticed the heart in the middle was the crossing itself. She turned her back on the loop, took the narrow track straight down through the scree, and let the mules find their footing.

The boy was breathing when she reached the inn at dusk, and the innkeeper swore the old stone had moved in the night, the words sitting a little lower on the curve, as if they had been waiting for someone to stop going round.
