Stretching cat outline on the side
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single black outline of a cat stretched out low, with its tail curling up at the top left and its head and front paw drawn with simple strokes at the right. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the design is in black ink only against warm, yellow-toned skin. The composition is a long diagonal, with the tail sweeping across most of the frame and an arm visible at the lower left edge.

Nobody could move him. The guard tried a biscuit tin and got a look for his trouble. In the end the driver just sat with his hand on the brake and waited, and Mr Pryce waved his flag at the sky as if it had personally offended him.

I think about it more than I should. Everything else on this line is in a hurry, the milk churns, the post sacks, the lads running for the connection to Hereford. That cat has never once run. He lies out along the warm edge of the platform where the sun comes off the tin roof and stretches until his tail is the last thing to let go, curling up at the very end like the question mark on a telegram.
Last night I walked out to the level crossing after the final train and found him sitting on the rail itself, dead still, watching the signal lamp go from red to green and back again. I did not call him. I stood there with my coat open until he decided he had seen enough of the world for one day and stepped down onto the gravel.
Tell Dad the cat is fine and so is the station. We are still going nowhere fast, and I find I don't mind it so much now. Love, Ruth
