Sea turtle tattoo on a foot
Other · Colour · Photo
A cartoon-style sea turtle with a green shell, yellow shell seams and dotted flippers swims through swirling blue water on the top of a foot. Smooth outlines and soft gradient shading give the turtle a rounded, three-dimensional look, while pale teal and blue wash the background. A small sun outline and a star sit in the upper and lower left of the design, and a second flipper appears at the bottom.

Every morning the young turtle Marrow swam up through the blue to check on the sun, and every morning it hung exactly where she had left it, a pale coin above the water. The older turtles said it was not hers to worry over. Sun was for gulls and fishermen, they said, and a turtle with any sense kept to the reef where the light went green and quiet.

Marrow had no sense of that kind. She had a crack along one seam, mended with gold from a cup that a girl called Nell Ferrier had dropped off the harbour wall the summer before. Nell fished for crabs from the quay with a string and a sausage, and when the turtle came up to snatch the bait, the two of them became friends in the careless way of children and animals. Nell mended nets for her grandfather. She talked to Marrow through the surface with a stick and a stream of questions.
One evening Nell tapped the stick twice against the hull of the upturned dinghy, which was their signal, and held up a jam jar with a tin star floating inside. 'The sun only comes close at dusk,' she said. 'It goes down into the sea and comes out the other side. My gran says so.' Marrow watched the red disc sink through the water's skin, and she understood that it had not left at all. It had only gone under.
Next morning the old turtles found her asleep on the sandbank below the lighthouse, flippers spread, one gold seam glinting. Nobody asked where she had been. Marrow kept the tin star beside her in the sand, and every dusk after, she swam up to see the sun go down and to wave a flipper at the girl on the quay.
