Sea turtle with heart shell design
Black and grey · Flash
A bold black silhouette of a sea turtle seen from above, with flippers spread and head at the top. The shell is divided into rounded sections, and three hearts of white space run down the centre of the shell. The image is a simple two-tone drawing on a plain white background with no shading.

Mind that knot, Ned, it's the one with the twist in it, and don't go yanking the mesh like your father did. Right. You'll have the turtle, then. Old Marrow, they called her, as broad as the lifeboat slipway and twice as patient. She came in with the spring tides every year and swam the same slow line from the Gull Rock to the harbour mouth, nose up, looking at nothing.

Every spring the sea took somebody, and every spring it gave something back: a glove, a rope end, a wedding ring on a bit of string. Marrow gathered them up on her back where nobody could see. The sea worked them smooth, the way it does, until each one was a white heart pressed into her shell. Three hearts she carried down the middle, one for each boat the Carrack ever swallowed, so the village would know none of them had been forgotten.
Your grandad swore he saw her once, the winter his brother went missing. He said she came up under the boat so gently he could have counted the plates on her shell. She didn't lift him anywhere. She just stayed close, till the fog thinned and he could see the lights of home. Then she slid back under, heavy with the bay's leftovers, and he never saw her again.
So when the net snags, you let it snag, and you say thank you to the water, same as I do. Hand me that twine. And no, the turtle does not want your crust.
