Sea turtle with sunset and palm tree

Back · Mixed · Photo

A sea turtle outlined in solid black, with swirling wave patterns across its flippers and head. Its shell contains a coloured scene of a yellow and orange sunset over calm blue-green water, with a palm tree silhouetted against the sky. The bold black outline contrasts with the shaded colour inside the shell, and the tattoo is centred on smooth skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Penhallow was the first to see the turtle come up the slip at Porthglaze, the week the gales took the bathing hut roof. It came up at dusk, black and shining as a wet boot, and she went down with a lantern because her lodgers were out and somebody had to see to it.

Its shell had a window in it, or so it looked. Through the dark rim she could see a sunset, yellow and orange, with a palm leaning over water the colour of a kingfisher's back. The sun sat low on the sea inside the turtle, and it did not go down.

Her grandfather had told her the old story. The sea keeps a piece of every evening it has seen, and when a turtle has swum far enough west it carries one home on its back. Nobody in Porthglaze believed it, which was why nobody had ever come to claim the thing.

She knelt on the wet stones. "You're in the wrong bay," she told it. The turtle blinked slowly, its flippers curling foam, and moved toward the sea. She followed it to the tideline and watched the light sink under the waves, then rise again beyond the harbour wall, where a boat was coming home with its lamp lit.
