Sunset landscape with pine trees in a circle

Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A round tattoo shows a hilly landscape with two pine trees in the foreground, under a sky of purple, blue and orange clouds at sunset. The shading is soft and painterly, with smooth gradients in the sky and darker greens in the trees. The circular frame sits on the upper back, and a hand and patterned clothing are visible at the edge of the photo.

The porthole came off the Ardmore in the February gale, and Tomas carried it up the brae on his shoulder like a shield he had taken off a dead man. It was brass gone green at the rim, round as a coin and nearly as heavy, and when Mam saw it she said nothing at all. She went to the kitchen and came back with the rag and the tin of polish.

It took us a month to clean the glass. Through it, from the bench by the byre, the island looked like something painted by someone in a hurry: the two Scots pines on the knoll above the bay, bent east by a hundred winters, then the hills going blue and then purple, and above them the sky, which in the evenings took on the colour of a fire being banked. Dad planted the pines the year I was born. He always said they would outlive the fishing, the ferry and very likely the minister.

The evening before the boat for the mainland, I sat on the bench with the porthole in my lap and watched the sun drop behind the far hill. The orange ran down the cloud like paint off a loaded brush. Tomas came and sat beside me and didn't ask whether I would go. He just looked through the glass with one eye shut, the way Dad used to, and said the sky was better through the window than without it.

I left the porthole bolted to the byre wall where it belonged. Some mornings I still walk down to the pier and look back up, and the round of light sits in the hillside with the two pines inside it, small and dark and holding on.
