Seated cartoon man with glasses on a leg
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bold black outline of a cartoon man wearing glasses and a jacket sits on a rock or block among tufts of grass. The linework is even and unshaded, with no grey tones within the figure. The image is a close, square black and white photograph with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Dear Ronnie,

I have taken to sitting on the big flat stone at the bottom of Cutler's Lane, the one the council never moved when they put in the new car park. Mrs Pargeter says it was a mounting block for horses before the lane had a name. I say it is the only seat in Pellow that has never asked me to pay for a coffee. The grass comes up round it in tufts, and the dandelions have given up trying to look like anything but weeds.
You will want to know about the hat. I put it down on the grass the first morning because the sun was in my eyes and the glasses were already doing enough. Then the wind came off the reservoir and took it twice around the lamp post. Mrs Pargeter's grandson returned it with an apology and a sticker of a bus on the brim. I have not decided whether to be cross.
The bus is the reason I sit here at all. The number 9 used to stop on the corner every twenty minutes, and I would wait on this stone with my shoes off, counting the pigeons and reading the timetable I had long since memorised. Last Thursday it did not come, and nor did the Thursday after. The council has sent a notice about the depot. So now I sit and wait for nothing in particular, and the nothing has turned out to be perfectly comfortable.
Come up at the weekend and sit with me. Bring a flask. The stone is cold, but it keeps its promises better than the buses ever did.
Yours, Harold
