Seated fairy pencil drawing
Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a small fairy sitting with her knees drawn up, wearing a short dress with a heart-shaped neckline and fluffy pom-pom shoes. Her hair is gathered into a top bun, and two large, veined wings rise behind her. Soft graphite shading gives the figure volume against a plain white background.

The fairy came up from the mill race every spring, the year the Haydon brothers dammed the beck, and sat on the chapel wall with her knees drawn up as though she had all the time in the world. Nobody in Little Cawby had ever seen her climb. She was simply there one morning, her hair wound into a bun and her wings held still as dock leaves after rain.

Mrs Pilling at the post office knitted her a pair of shoes from the leftover wool of the coronation jumper, pom-poms the size of walnuts, and left them on the wall in a paper bag. The fairy put them on without a word. The next week a storm broke the dam and took the footbridge with it, and the Haydon boys, who had argued all winter over who would pay for the timber, stood in the mud at dawn with nothing to say to each other.
It was the fairy who went down to the water. She did not fly, which surprised them more than anything, but walked along the ditch in her woollen shoes and pointed with one small hand at the stones that would hold and the ones that would not. By noon the boys had a crossing of flat slate, and by evening the quarrel had gone out of them like bathwater.
When the frost came she was gone from the wall, but the shoes sat in their paper bag, folded neatly, pom-poms dry. Mrs Pilling kept them in the window until spring, when a single hawthorn leaf was found tucked into the left one, and she never asked where it had come from.
