Seated fox cub on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A small, seated fox cub faces left with its head slightly lowered and its bushy tail curled around its feet. The fur is rendered in soft orange and rust tones with darker brown detailing on the ears, muzzle and paws, and gentle shading gives it volume. The tattoo sits centrally on the outer upper arm against a plain pale background, with the rest of the arm and a white sleeve framing it.

Dear Tom,

The fox came down to the quay again on Tuesday, the little one with the rust-coloured coat you wrote about. Mum says she's a vixen's cub from the gorse above Porthallow, left behind when the rest went after rabbits on the cliff. She sat by the net store the whole morning with her tail wrapped round her feet like a woman waiting for a bus, and she never once looked at the boats. I think she was watching the gulls fight over the gutting table.
Dad's boat came in at four with the Mary Ann riding low, and the men were shouting about the price of pollack. Nobody noticed her except me. I'd brought a heel of bread from the bakery, so I broke it on the step and put it down a yard from her paws. She tipped her head to one side, the way a dog does when it's working out a question, then lowered her muzzle and studied the bread for a long while before she took it.
Here is the strange part. When Dad saw her he stopped dead, took off his cap, and said his own mother used to leave bread out for the foxes the night before a boat went out. He said it was bad luck to step over one on the slipway. I told him that was nonsense, and he laughed, and then he went out on the night tide with the crew anyway. She was gone by morning, but the bread was gone too.
Keep your head down out there and mind the weather off the Lizard. Come home and tell me whether the fox sat by you too.
Love, Kit
