Black ink lettering tattoo on the inner wrist showing a semicolon beside the words 'You Are The Author' in mixed script fonts.

Semicolon and 'You Are The Author' on a wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black ink tattoo on the inner wrist. A solid semicolon sits to the left of the words 'You Are The' in a clean serif-style print, with 'Author' written in a larger flowing script below. The ink is dark grey-black, the lines are of even weight, and the design fills the centre of the frame against plain skin with a tiled floor visible in the background.

The slate in Miss Hollis's classroom has a crack running across it like a seam of coal, and the chalk squeaks every time she writes on it. You sit at the back, third desk from the stove, with a pencil stub behind your ear because the colliery hooter already sounded and your father took the good pencil down with him at six.

She draws a small dot above a comma and turns to face the room. 'A semicolon,' she says, 'is a full stop that has decided not to stop. It says the thought carries on, even when the sentence seems finished.' Somebody at the front snorts. You want to tell her that nothing in this village decides anything. Men go down at six and come up grey at two, and the word for that is shift, not sentence.

That evening you sit on the back step with the ledger from the Co-op, turning pages until you find an empty line near the end. Your father watches from the kitchen door, his hands black to the wrist, the lamp check tin hanging from one finger. He does not mention the pencil. He only says the coal will still be there in the morning.

You write it anyway, small and careful, the way she taught you: You are the author. Then you add the dot and the comma beneath it, and the line does not end where your father expects it to.
