"send me" lettering on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm with the words "send me" tattooed in lowercase black lettering in a typewriter-style serif font. The linework is solid and even, with no shading, and the ink is black against lightly marked skin. The text sits centrally across the arm, with a blue padded surface and a dark rest below.

The wire came in at ten to four, just as Mrs Ruddock was counting sixpences into the tin. Two words, no name, no sender, the way the lads at the mill sent them when they had no money left for more. I held the slip up to the lamp as if the paper might say more if I asked it nicely.

Nobody in Hebden Lowe had a brother at sea that spring, or a daughter in service in Leeds, so I sat down at the Imperial typewriter to answer it the only way I knew. I typed the words back out, letter by letter, in the plain serif the Post Office had taught us to trust, and then I stopped. Typewriter keys do not argue. They strike what you press and leave a mark on the paper that will not wash off.

The next morning a boy came in from the Crescent with a second wire, longer this time. Ask me what, it said. I laughed, and then I didn't, because the first slip had been filed at the platform in Halifax. The boy said a man in a flat cap had pressed it into his hand and paid a shilling to have it sent on before the nine-fifteen left.

I wrote back: what? The answer came by return. Come and find out. I put my coat on over my apron, left the typewriter ticking under its cover, and walked to the station with the ticket held tight. Somewhere past Sowerby Bridge I understood that the words had never been a request at all. They were a door held open, and I was the one who had to walk through it.
