Send and me lettering on both heels
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare heels are shown from behind, each with a single word in black script lettering: send on the left and me on the right. The lines are fine and even, with soft shading from the photograph's monochrome tone. The words sit centred on the heels against a dark wooden floor, with the feet filling most of the frame.

Dear Ruth,

The Tuesday post came in without a word from Lowestoft, so I have taken the rounds myself and left the ledger with Mr Pell, who thinks I've gone soft in the head. I'm writing this at the back of the bakery with the ovens still ticking and flour gone grey along the windowsill. The town hasn't woken yet, and neither have I, not properly.
You asked in your last letter what I wanted, and I was too proud to answer. So here it is, plainly, on the back of a bill of lading because it was the only paper to hand. Send me the things Father used to say when the boats came in late, the ones he'd mutter on the step with his boots off, to nobody in particular. I don't need the big news. I need the small, stupid sentences that prove you still remember the kitchen.
I know the post is slow and you've never liked writing. I know Mother will read this over your shoulder and tell you what to say. Tell her she can add a postscript if she likes, provided it isn't about the wedding.
The bread's out now. Crust like a cracked saucer, the way you liked it. I've set one aside in a paper bag with your name on it, which means it will go stale before the train gets it to you. Send me something anyway. Send me anything at all.
Your sister, Nell
