Sewing machine tattoo on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, detailed tattoo of a vintage treadle-style sewing machine sits on the inner forearm, shown in fine linework with soft shading on the metal parts. A larger rose and a blurred script tattoo are partly visible at the top of the frame. The image is in black and grey against a pale skin tone, with the background out of focus.

The machine rode in the truck bed under a moth-eaten blanket, its iron foot bolted to a plank so it wouldn't walk across the washboard road. Uncle Mo had bought it off a widow in Needles for forty dollars and a promise to fetch back the cabinet drawer he never found. Every mile south the heat lifted the varnish into little blisters, and I kept checking the bolts with my palm flat against the cold cast iron.

We stopped at a diner outside Baker where the waitress had a hem coming undone on her apron. Mo asked if she had thread. She didn't, but the cook's wife had a spool of black cotton in a biscuit tin, and within the hour he had the treadle rocking under the awning, the wheel flashing silver in the sun. Lorry drivers slowed to watch. A boy brought a pair of jeans with a split seam, then a dog's collar, then a wedding veil a girl had snagged on a fence post, and Mo mended each one as if it were the only job left in the Mojave.
By dusk the biscuit tin was empty and the queue ran out past the petrol pumps. Mo wiped the bobbin with his thumb and told me a machine only ever stitches what it means to hold together. Then he folded the blanket into the cab and drove on, leaving the treadle with the cook's wife in exchange for a thermos and a lift to the next town.
I looked back once from the road and saw her foot already moving on the pedal, the wheel turning in the last of the light.
