Sewing tools and Create banner on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Sewing tools, including scissors, thread spools, a tape measure and buttons, are arranged around a central ribbon banner that reads Create. Bold black outlines and solid fills in yellow, red, blue and green give a classic flash look. The design runs up the forearm, with the scissors blade at the top and a red pincushion with green detail at the bottom.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bell at Hollin Colliery had stopped for the third time that week, and Nell Haskett still had forty buttons to sew on before the Saturday dance. She sat at the window above the chemist with the tape measure looped round her neck like a stole, the scissors open on the table beside Mr Pryce's good wool waistcoat, which he wanted taken in for a wedding he had no real intention of attending.

Her husband Tom had gone down the pit at six every morning for twenty-two years and come up grey to the eyes. Nobody in Hollin talked about the meetings in front of her, which was how she knew exactly what was being said. She threaded a needle with blue cotton, the spool nearly bare, and thought about the lodge banner folded in the chapel vestry, faded from a red she could no longer name.

On Friday the committee came to ask whether she would re-stitch it before the march, because the letters had lifted at the corners and the wind kept catching them. Nell asked what it ought to say. Owen Price, all elbows and nerves, said it should just say Create, because that was the only thing left to do now the shaft was shut. She told him it was a daft word for a banner. She took the thing home anyway.

By Sunday night she had unpicked the old lettering, cut a fresh strip of gold silk from a dress she would never wear again, and sewn CREATE in black thread, each stitch pulled tight enough to hold. Tom held the lamp steady while she bit the last thread. He ran his thumb along the letters, slowly, the way he checked a seam for fraying, and said nothing at all, and she took that as yes.
