Black and grey shaded feather tattoo with a script word beside it, sitting on the lower abdomen above a lace waistband.

Shaded feather with script on the lower abdomen

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded black and grey feather runs diagonally across the lower abdomen, its barbs and fine tips rendered with soft grey gradients. A stylised script word sits along the upper edge of the feather, set in dark ink with clean, even strokes. The skin is photographed close up with a soft blue patterned fabric at the left edge and a white lace waistband across the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pass closed on the feast of Saint Brannoc with three travellers still in the parlour of the Hollin Gate inn, and the snow came sideways off the moor until it buried the stable ridge. Nobody went out. They ate the last of the salt mutton and drank the cellar's thin cider, and the youngest of them, a carter's boy called Tobin Reeve, kept turning a grey feather over in his fingers. He had found it caught in his collar at the last crossroads and could not say where it came from.

On the third night the feather began to tap at the shutter. The innkeeper's daughter, Elspeth, unbarred it, and a cold draught came in carrying the smell of pine smoke from very far away. Something sat on the sill, a bird the colour of wet slate with a pale ring around one eye. It did not fly off. It looked at Tobin and waited, the way a neighbour waits at a door.

"She writes to you," said the old carrier, Hob Maddern, who had seen stranger things on the high road. "The feather's the letter. It always was. You've to write back."

Tobin had no ink, so he dipped the sooty end of a poker in the cold cider dregs and wrote one word along the quill's spine, in the careful hand his mother had taught him: home. The bird took the feather in its beak, bowed its head once, and was gone into a white dark that no longer seemed quite so deep.

By morning the snow had thinned to a dusting. The three travellers went down the pass on foot, and in the track ahead Tobin found a single grey feather lying on the crust, its tip pointing south toward his mother's farm.
