Shaded rose and script on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A shaded black and grey rose with curling stem and leaves covers the upper forearm, with a looping script word on the wrist. The rose uses soft grey gradients and fine linework, while the script is outlined in grey. A circular inset in the corner shows a red lip print tattoo beside the wrist script.

The raffle prize was a grey rose in a jam jar, and nobody had bid on it except me. Mrs Hollis, who had taught us all to join our letters, was pouring squash into paper cups as if the evening depended on it. Thirty years since Form 4B, and the hall still smelled of floor polish and bruised oranges.

Owen found me by the coat rack. He still wore the same inky cuff he'd had at fifteen, though now it covered a watch rather than a biro mark. "You kept the note?" he asked, and I pretended I didn't know what he meant. In Year Ten he had folded a message into a rose petal and pressed a lipstick kiss onto the paper, the way girls did in films. I had kept the kiss, not the words, which had been about maths homework anyway.
We walked out to the car park, where the old greenhouse behind the caretaker's hut still stood with its panes gone green. Owen said he had tried to grow a grey rose there once, a sport nobody had ever seen, and failed every spring. "Some things only come up in the dark," he said, which was the sort of line we would have laughed at aged fifteen.
I gave him back the jam jar. Inside, folded small, was the same paper, the lipstick faded to the colour of old brick. He read it under the streetlamp and his mouth moved on the old words. Then he tucked it into his blazer pocket and walked back towards the hall without a goodbye, leaving me with a prize I hadn't meant to win and a rose that, I noticed, had quietly stopped wilting.
