Shaded rose on the forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large rose with a tightly curled centre and outer petals wraps around the forearm, with leaves spreading out at the top and bottom. The petals are built from soft grey shading with fine dark linework defining the folds, and the leaves have darker shadowed edges. The rose is shown in black and grey ink, photographed straight on against a silver plastic sheet and a wooden floor.

The Wardian case had been lashed to the mainmast for nineteen days, and Thomas Lowry had slept no more than an hour at a stretch since the Cape. Inside the glass, a climbing rose he had dug from a hillside above Canton had lost every leaf in the Roaring Forties. Then, on the morning the lookout first called for land, it put out one bud, tight as a fist and grey as the sea.

Mr Ebbs, the purser, came up the companionway with his hat in his hands. "Captain says the case is wanted for the lamp oil casks, Mr Lowry. Your plant can go over the side with the other dead weight." Thomas did not look up. "It has one more day in it. Give me the day, and I'll give you my share of the Falmouth wages." Ebbs laughed, but he went below without taking the case.
That night Thomas sat with the lamp turned low and a damp rag folded over the soil. He watched the bud loosen. The outer petals rolled back in slow folds, shadowed at their edges, while the centre stayed curled tight like a closed hand. Leaves unfurled at the top of the stem and again at the bottom, dark and serrated, as if the plant meant to wind itself around something it intended to keep.
At first light the ship came about past the Lizard, and the rose stood fully open, pale as paper in the dawn. Thomas took a pencil from his waistcoat and wrote on the brass plate of the case: Ada, for the sister who had stayed home to mind the nursery. He tapped the glass once. "There," he said, to nobody in particular, and the bell struck eight.
