Shaded wing tattoo on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single wing with layered feathers is tattooed across the skin of an arm, angled from the upper left towards the right. The feathers are shaded with soft gradients from dark black at their edges to light grey highlights, giving a three-dimensional, lifelike effect. The wing fills most of the frame against a plain black background.

Dear Nell, the gulls have gone quiet since the storm, and Father has taken to sitting on the harbour wall each evening with his pipe unlit, watching the ferry lanterns come round the point. I told him the Mary Ann will be late with the salt and the coal, that the Tilley boy will have run her aground on the Bar again, but he only nods and asks whether the pilot has been seen.

You will remember the wing Grandmother kept in the cedar box, the long grey one with the feathers layered like slate on a roof. She swore it came off a gannet that flew into the lamp the winter you were born, and that it would never rot if it was kept dry. I found it under the stairs on Tuesday. The quills have gone brittle, but the shading is still there, dark at the edges and pale where the light used to catch it. I have been carrying it down to the quay in my apron pocket, I cannot say why.
Yesterday I took it out at low tide and held it up against the wind off the water. It did not lift. It only shivered, the way a thing does when it remembers what it was made for. Father saw me from the wall and for the first time in a month he stood up and came down the steps to meet me. He did not say anything. He simply took the feather from my hand and turned it over, and I think he was counting something.
When the Mary Ann finally rounded the point this morning, her lamp was lit and her deck was full of men waving their caps. Father laughed out loud, a sound I had nearly forgotten. Come home soon, Nell, and bring the cedar box. I believe we shall need to give the grey feather back to the sea.
