The hooks were older than the hall. Nobody in Carrow Dale could say who had fixed them to the lime wall, only that they were bent from one length of iron and faced each other across the door like two people who had quarrelled and would not be the first to look away. Every Saturday the farm lads hung their caps on them, and every Saturday the caps slid off before midnight.

Mrs Pennick, who swept the floor for the parish, said the hooks wanted something to hold. So in the spring the mill burned, Tom Ashdown brought the fiddle his father had left him, and Ellen Vardy brought a red ribbon she had been saving for a wedding that never came. They tied the two together between the hooks, fiddle and ribbon, and the dance went on beneath them until the lamps guttered.

On the night the ribbon finally gave, the hall was half empty and the rain came sideways off the moor. Tom lifted the fiddle down and found the hooks had worn two bright grooves into the iron where the cord had rubbed. He said nothing. Ellen ran one finger along a groove the way she counted stitches, then walked out into the rain without her coat.

Mrs Pennick found the coat in the morning, hung on the left hook and dry as bread. The hooks have held nothing since but that coat, and the dancers step carefully around the patch of floor where the boards are worn smooth, because everyone in Carrow Dale knows whose feet kept time there.
