Winged triangle emblem on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black tattoo of a winged emblem made of three triangles sits on the outer side of an ankle, near the heel. The shapes are crisp and filled in with no shading, and the wings are made of angular, jagged strokes. The photo shows the foot resting on a wooden floor, with red toenail polish visible at the toes.

Three triangles sat at the heart of the crest, sharp as cut card, and the feathers that swept out from them were jagged and unforgiving, the way his father had cut them into the pattern board forty winters before. Where the brass had run thin, the wing showed a pale gap, like a missing tooth.

Mercy, the apprentice, swept ash from the furnace door and watched him reach for the widow's bundle. Ada Greave had walked three miles through the flood to bring it: a pewter spoon, a thimble, a button from a man's coat. "Her Walter's," Ada had said, and nothing more. Tobias melted them down together, poured the wing again, and the gap filled with a grey seam that would never quite match the gold around it.
The bell hung in the tower of St Ebba's by the first frost. When the ringers pulled it up to speed, the note came out true and low and carried over the drowned fields to the far farms. Mercy stood beneath it and tilted her head at the crest on the bell's shoulder. The grey seam caught the lamplight, and she was the only one who noticed that the wing now reached a little past the rim, as if it were still looking for something across the water.
