Shark and whale underwater on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large realistic tattoo shows a great white shark with its jaws open above a dark whale, set against deep blue water with light rising through the surface. The shading is smooth and detailed, with fine highlights on the shark's teeth and the whale's skin. Red streaks drift through the water between the two animals, and the design fills the thigh from the top edge to below the knee.

Dear Tom, the boats came in again this morning with nothing in the hold but a bad smell and a rope tangled round Eddie Penhale's ankle, so you can imagine the mood on the quay. Mum says to tell you the kettle's mended and the chapel roof held in the gale, though the vicar has taken to lighting candles for the lot of you, which I think is his way of saying he misses the sea.

Mr Gorran came up from the harbour office on Tuesday with a newspaper from Plymouth folded to a photograph of a whale the size of the Lady Mary, lying on the mudflats near Hayle. He wanted to know if anyone had heard a bang out past the Wolf rock on Sunday night. Nobody had, though Jack Ruan swears his dog went under the table and stayed there till dawn. I told him a whale doesn't make a noise when it dies, only a shark does, and he looked at me as if I'd grown a second head.

Here is the odd bit, and you'll laugh. Last Thursday I walked out to the end of the breakwater with the spyglass Dad left us, and the water was so clear I could see a grey back turning slow beneath the surface. Then a pale shape rose up under it, and the whole sea went red in streaks. I thought it was blood from the fish market gutters, but it was further out than that. By the time I'd fetched Gorran there was nothing left but a slick and a row of gulls.

Don't you dare go out past the Wolf without me. Write soon and tell me what the water looks like where you are, because I've decided I'll paint it on the parlour wall, as blue as I can make it, with the red left out.
