Two dolphins swimming on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
Two dolphins swim side by side against a blue underwater background with rising bubbles near the top. The dolphins are rendered in realistic shading with fine highlights along their bodies, and the blue wash fades softly into the skin at the edges. The image is a close crop of the upper arm and shoulder, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

You have counted the bubbles three times since the generator coughed out at the fairground on Hollis Park, and each time the number comes out differently. Dolphins don't care about your arithmetic. Marlowe and Sitka are already circling the tank the way they have circled every night for eleven years, side by side, one a fraction ahead, as if the water still has edges worth testing.

The circus is folding. The big top sold to a scrapyard in Wigan on Tuesday, the clowns went north on the coach, and the lion keeper took his cats to a sanctuary that replied with a form. The tank is the last thing on the list, and the council man with the clipboard wants it drained by Friday. You have a torch, a bucket and a letter from a marine rescue centre in Cornwall offering a sea pen and a place for two animals who are, as they put it, no longer performing.
You open the gate at the far end, the one nobody uses because the hinge screams. It screams. Sitka hears it first and turns, and Marlowe follows, and for a moment you think they will stay out of sheer habit. Then the lamp catches the pale streaks along their backs, the bright veins that always made the children gasp, and they slide out past your knees into the outflow channel where the tide is pushing in from the estuary.
In the van afterwards, with the heater dead, you scroll through old photographs until you reach one of the tank at dusk, the bubbles rising like a question nobody bothered to answer. You leave the window down all the way to Cornwall. Somewhere behind you, the water is still running out of the tank into the grass, and you do not turn round to see it go.
