Shark fin in a wave on a heel
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot is raised against a clear blue sky, showing a tattoo on the heel of a shark fin breaking through a curling wave. The shark fin is rendered with solid, shaded ink, while the wave is built from softer, feathered grey and dark blue-grey strokes. The tattoo is the clear focal point, set against the smooth skin of the heel and the plain sky behind.

The harbour master of Velenmoor wanted the shark dead before the tide turned, and he said so every morning from the quay, as though repetition might make the water obey him. I was the one sent to look. My brother had been the strong swimmer, but he had gone to the eastern wall with the chain gangs, so the job fell to me, a girl of fourteen with a borrowed coracle and a sack of salted pilchard.

The creature did not look like a monster. It kept to the edge of the swell, where a wave curled and went grey and then blue-black at its belly, and the fin cut through the top of it the way a knife parts a loaf. Each time it turned, the water folded over it softly, as if the sea were trying to hide it from me. I stopped paddling. My father, who drowned the winter before, had a rule: never chase what is busy with the weather.
I fed the fish out in a line, one at a time, and watched the fin follow the slick of oil. Then I let the coracle drift toward the reef where the water runs green, and I waited for a wave to lift me. The shark came up beneath it, rolled once, and was gone into the trough. When I came home the harbour master asked if I had killed it. I told him the sea had been using the wave as a door, and that I had only been standing on the wrong side of it.
That night I climbed the seawall and looked for the fin in the moonlight. I saw only the white crest breaking and reforming, over and over, like a page turned by someone who had nothing left to say.
