Sea turtle with pink flower on an ankle
Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A black tribal-style sea turtle with spiral patterns across its shell and curled motifs on its flippers sits on the side of an ankle. A small pink flower rests on the turtle's head, the only colour in the image. The foot is shown in soft black and white against a plain, pale background.

Nell Trewin had mended nets on the quay at Porthaven for thirty-one years, and in all that time the only creature she had ever seen come ashore on its own was the turtle that spring, dragging itself up the slipway past the bait shed as if it had an appointment.

Nobody in the harbour knew what to make of it. Dennis from the lifeboat wanted to ring the aquarium in Plymouth. The Pascoe twins wanted to put it in the paddling pool. Nell only sat down on the wet stones beside it with her tin of tar and her bone needle and waited, because the old shell was cracked along one edge and something in her hands knew how to stitch a split.
It was the spirals that held her. Someone had once told her that the marks on a turtle's back were like the rings of a tree, and she had never forgotten it. She counted them while the tide came up. Three on the shell, a curl at each flipper, as though the animal had been drawn in a hurry by a hand that had watched the sea for a long time.
By dusk the crack was closed and the creature slid back down into the green water without a backward look. Nell found a single pink mallow flower caught in the coil of rope at her feet, pressed flat by the wind. She tucked it behind the turtle's head in the wet sand, where the next tide could take it wherever it liked.
