Venus symbol on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a bare foot and ankle, with a small Venus symbol drawn in thin black linework on the ankle bone area. The circle and cross are cleanly outlined with no shading, and the tattoo sits as a single small mark against smooth skin. The background is a pale wooden wall and a white shaggy rug, which keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The brass was going green again by the time Nell reached the roadhouse, so she set the kettle on and rubbed at the mirror behind the counter with a rag and a squeeze of lemon, the way her grandfather had shown her before his hands gave out. The mirror was copper-backed and older than the building. He had cast it himself in a yard behind the Wells, and it still threw the light back warmer than anything else on the Ninety Mile.

Sixty kilometres of nothing ran east from Sallow Wells, and the lorries came through in ones and twos, drivers buying cold pies and asking the time as if the clock above the fridge were a rumour. The man who came in at dusk wore a dust-grey shirt and held a folded map with no road on it. He wanted to know if the morning star would show over the ridge, because a woman had promised to meet him at the coast where the star came up first, and he meant to be standing there when it did.

"Venus comes up before the sun if the air's clean," Nell said, wiping the counter in long strokes. "Grandad said it was the metal and the star both, copper and light, keeping their appointments when nobody else would." She didn't tell him that the morning star was the evening star too, the same bright thing seen twice in its different hours, or that her grandfather had only ever made mirrors for people who were coming back.

He left a note under the sugar bowl and went out into the blue. Nell polished the mirror until it held the whole window, the road running pale and straight into the dark, and she hung it facing the car park so that the first bright point over the ridge would be the thing it caught.
