Grid of ten cat line drawings
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows ten square panels arranged in two columns, each holding a simple black outline drawing of a cat. The poses vary, including a cat stretching, curled up, sitting upright, playing and lying on its back. The linework is thin and even on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

The lift in Harrowgate House had been broken since March, so Mrs Pell took the stairs to the ninth floor every morning with a shopping trolley bumping behind her, and every morning she passed the notice someone had taped to the landing wall. LOST: ginger tom, answers to Biscuit, last seen on the balcony of flat 9C. Reward offered. Under it, in different handwriting, someone had drawn a small cat in pencil, all loops and whiskers.

She found Biscuit on the eleventh floor, where he had no business being. He was sitting on the windowsill of the stairwell in a patch of thin sun, folding himself into a neat curl as if the glass were a cushion. When she called him he stretched first, front legs out, rear end high, a long lazy bow, then stalked down the stairs ahead of her with his tail up like a question mark.
At the ninth floor door of 9C a young man in a dressing gown was waiting with his arms open and a face that had clearly not slept. He said thank you four times. Biscuit walked straight past him into the flat and jumped onto a chair, where he sat bolt upright and washed one paw with great dignity, as though he had never been gone at all.
Mrs Pell went back down the stairs with her trolley. On the landing she tore the reward notice off the wall, folded it into quarters, and put it in her coat pocket. Someone would want to pin up the next one, she thought, and there was no sense leaving the drawing of the cat hanging there for them to pity.
