Black cat silhouette flash sheet

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

The sheet shows around a dozen solid black cat silhouettes scattered across a white background, in poses including sitting, stretching, lying down, arching and walking. The shapes are filled with flat black with smooth outlines and no internal linework or shading. The image is entirely black ink on white, with no body or skin visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the black cat has moved her kittens into the boot cupboard again, all four of them, and Mrs Hadley says she'll not have them underfoot at the chapel tea. I have told her the cat was here before the new manager and will be here after him. Write and tell me whether Dan's landlady keeps a mouser, or whether we are the only household cursed with animals that think they own the place.

She keeps a timetable of her own. Every morning at half five she sits on the wall by the lamp room with her tail wrapped round her feet, watching the men go past in ones and twos, and she does not blink at any of them. When the whistle goes she stretches out long along the rail, back arched like a bow, and then she trots off up the lane as if she has business at the top of the hill. Dad used to say a cat chooses where the ground is sound. I used to think that was just Dad talking.

Last Thursday there was a fall in the east drift, nothing worse than a broken leg for old Ivor. The cat was not on the wall that morning, and nobody saw her go. Yesterday I came up the lane with the flask and found her lying across the threshold of the lamp room, tail curled tight over her nose, as neat as a paperweight. Nobody has managed to shift her, and Mr Pryce has stopped trying.

I have left her be. Bring the good scissors when you come at Christmas, will you? The bunker needs a proper door, and I haven't the nerve to build one with the kittens inside. Your loving sister, Margaret.
