Ship's wheel tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black ship's wheel sits on the inner ankle of a person whose legs are crossed, wearing white leather trainers and grey leggings. The wheel has a central hub, a ring and eight evenly spaced spokes, drawn with thin, clean linework and solid black ink. The photograph is taken from above on a plain light grey ground, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

Nobody in Porthgwidden would burn the wheel off the Marigold, though the boat had gone down with her crew in the February gales and the timber was good for nothing but kindling. Old Tamsin hauled it up the shingle on a barrow, set it against her cottage wall, and told the harbour children that a wheel with eight spokes would hold any course it was turned to, so long as somebody had the nerve to keep their hands on it.

The children laughed at her. Her grandson Jory did not. He was nine and had no father, and when the fleet went out one still morning under a sky like pewter, he slipped the cottage latch and carried the wheel down to the slip on his back, a thing twice his height, and lashed it to the bow of his uncle's coble with two lengths of rope.

The fog came in before noon. Men shouted to each other across water they could not see, and the boats began to drift toward the Stacks where the rocks lay under the swell. Jory stood in the bow with his feet braced, turning the wheel a spoke at a time and counting them with his thumb the way his grandmother had taught him, until the cold sea opened ahead of him like a road.

They came home with forty crates of pilchards and every man alive. Tamsin met them at the harbour wall and said nothing. She only took the boy's hand and walked him up the hill, where the wheel already stood against the cottage wall, its spokes beaded with salt.
