Small elephant outline on the lower abdomen

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small elephant is drawn in a single thin black outline, facing left with its trunk curled slightly. The linework is even and unshaded, with no fill or grey wash inside the figure. The tattoo sits low on the torso in the centre of a close crop, with a white top above and denim shorts below.

Dear Joe,

The lock keeper at Sawley has finally stopped asking when we'll be shifting the coal, because Mam drew Duchess on the cabin wall with a stub of carpenter's pencil and he has been staring at it all week. You would laugh. It's the same single line she uses for everything: the trunk curled up like a question, one foot lifted as if the canal were a puddle she didn't fancy stepping in.

Duchess came to us the winter the fair folded at Thorne. Her keeper went off to Blackpool with the rides and a promise to send for her, and no letter ever came. We could not keep an elephant on a barge, so Dad built her a stall from spare hatch boards and the lads fed her windfalls from the orchard wall. She walked the towpath every morning with her ears out like sails, and the bargees waved their caps at her as though she were the harbourmaster.

Last Tuesday the man from the council came to say she'd have to go to a proper sanctuary in Wales. Mam didn't argue. She took the pencil from the drawer and said a line never needs feeding. Then she sat on the step with her tea going cold and drew until the light went, and the wall was covered in nothing but that one small grey shape.

We cast off at six this morning with the cabin still smelling of pencil shavings. Looking back from the bend, I could see the drawing on the wall through the open hatch, facing the way we were going, which is west, towards you.
