Small cat face on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small cat face outline sits on the side of a finger, with pointed ears, a round head and whiskers drawn in a thin black line. The tattoo is unshaded and uses only the outline, with no fill. The black and grey photo shows the hand held up against a soft background, with dark nails and one glitter nail in the frame.

Dear Mr Ashby, you will think me foolish for writing about a cat, but the one that lives at the edge of Larch Hollow has taken to walking the boundary stones every morning, and I have started to suspect she is checking them. Mrs Pyke at the mill swears the cat sat on the third stone last Tuesday and stared at it until the lichen fell off by itself. I told her cats do not read, and she said that was exactly what a cat would want us to think.

The forest line has moved. You will remember the old survey you drew up the year before the flood, with the path running straight to the chapel. The path bends now. Nobody has walked it since the Harcourt boy went missing, but the cat walks it daily, tail up, pausing at every fork as though waiting for someone to catch up. I followed her once, as far as the holly. She turned, looked at me with her ears flat and her whiskers quite still, and went on without me.

I enclose a sketch of what she left on the gatepost on Thursday, a pressed fern and a single steel pen nib. I think she means you to come and correct the map. Bring your finest pen, and do not bring a dog. Yours in some bewilderment, Edith Sowerby, postmistress.
