Small infinity symbol on a wrist

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black infinity symbol sits on the inner wrist of a hand that is loosely curled with the fingers resting together. The lines are smooth and even with a simple, uniform weight. The background shows black leggings and a grey rug with pale lines, so the ink is the only colour in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferrywoman on the Tessel Reach had one rule, and she gave it to every child who crossed with a goat or a sack of seed: never cut the cord before the far bank answers. Nobody remembered who had first tied the loop. It ran from an iron ring at the north landing, round the drum of the winch and back again, one length of tarred line spliced into itself so many times that the joins had worn smooth as river stones.

Her grandson Ossie asked why it had to be a loop and not a rope with two ends. She said a rope with two ends was a thing you could lose, and a loop was a thing you could only keep going round. He called that nonsense. She laughed, took the oars, and let him haul the boat in hand over hand until the bank came up grey and the water went quiet under them.

The winter the lamps failed in the city, a man came down to the landing with a box under his arm and asked to be taken to the dead side, where his sister had gone to work the salt pans and had not written since the thaw. The ferrywoman was too stiff to row alone, so Ossie sat at the oars while she worked the winch, and the cord ran through her fingers like a slow pulse.

Halfway over, the man opened the box. Inside were a pair of brass spectacles and a folded letter, and he read it aloud to the water because he had no one else to read it to. It said the salt pans were closed and the sister was walking north. Ossie turned the boat around without being told. The ferrywoman kept the cord taut and did not cut it, and on the north bank the two of them found the sister already waiting at the iron ring, lantern lit, as though the loop had brought her there.
