Nobody in Scarrow expected Ysolde Brand to ask for the wheel. She was twelve, all elbows and tar-stained knuckles, and the harbour master's son told her a ship steered itself once the sea decided where it was going. She did not believe him. She spent every low tide on the slipway counting the rope coils on the Gannet Mary and learning which ones ran to the anchor and which ran to the rudder.

The herring season took them south in a sky that never quite cleared. Captain Oswin Crane let her take the wheel in the fog, and she felt the spokes pull against her palms like a horse wanting its head. The anchor rope hissed through the hawse at every heave. Oswin said the wheel was for choosing the way and the anchor was for keeping what you had. Ysolde wrote that on the back of a tally slate, because she meant to argue with it later.

The argument came off the Basque coast with a gale behind it. The men wanted the anchor dropped in the lee of a black rock so they could sit out the night. Ysolde ran to the cabin and told Oswin that holding fast would drive them onto the reef by morning, that the rock was waiting for a ship that would not move. He looked at her a long time. Then he gave her the wheel, and she ran before the wind with the cable paid out and the anchor dragging behind like a hand trailing in a stream, until the reef fell astern and the water went flat and silver.

At dawn the clouds over the bow turned the colour of pale ash and lifted off the water. Ysolde climbed to the forecastle and found the anchor still on its rope, scraped and bent but whole. She did not haul it up. She made the rope fast to a cleat and let it trail, the way a good ship should carry a weight she could not see.
